The trick here is to book two to three weeks out. For a week from publication, we found an $81 fare. Looking at November 15, the fare went up to $39 (which is still reasonable!). We found fares leaving Boston at 8pm and arriving into Manhattan at midnight for just $19 (before taxes), but the trip was for November 29. If you’re not familiar with the Amtrak service, know that much like plane travel, you’ll save if you book in advance and holidays are always more expensive. Sounds too good to be true? Some commenters online said they had trouble finding these fares, so we did some investigating. How low are the Amtrak 'Night Owl' prices, really? Night Owl fares offer the same service you’d get during normal business hours, but overnight and at a low price. This fare is available on select trains departing from 7pm through 7am traveling between New York City and Boston. You know how usually it's the early bird who gets the worm? Well, in this case the night owl is getting a deal, because Amtrak has just launched night owl fares from Boston to New York City for only $20 one way.
